Modern Bangkok

The foundation of city development as laid down by King Rama V was carried on by King Rama VI (King Vachiravudh) and King Rama VII (King Prachatipok) who followed up their father's (King Rama V) footsteps. In the occasion of 150 years anniversary of Bangkok, the Phrabhuddhayodfah Bridge was built to celebrate the city and brought much prosperity to the western Bangkok.

The imported Western style residential buildings and shophouses or blocks that likely copied from Singapore were of superior standard for esthetic and utility. The front of each block connected to its adjacent blocks with a continuous arcade. Behind the block was added a small space for growing shady trees.

Road making and city planning in those days showed a high standard. in the inner city area was found a road system that intimately fused with the canal system. By the road area percentage, it is found that the road area in Bangkok were proportionate to the population, with its pleasant environment and shady areas aplenty, and marked by attractive buildings, monasteries, and ancient sites, all of which left a good impression on visitors.

Bangkok was extensively expanded and crowded by mass of population from all regions of the country to search their jobs and education. As a result of increasing of transportation, many canals were filled up and gradually turned into roads. The canals alongside the roads such as Silom Rd, Thonon Trong Rd(Rama IV Rd), Prajaechin Rd (Petchburi Rd), Ratchaprasong Rd, were also disappeared because of road expanding. The city walls and forts also were demolished to use the space for shophouses.
