Go cycling! It may sound crazy, but it certainly is not. There are many cycling programs are available both in Rattanakosin Island and other parts of city.
Bangkok Green Bike (Aug 2008 - June 2009)
Since August 2008, all locals and travellers can explore old Bangkok district (Rattanakosin Island) by bicycles on Bangkok Green Bike campaign. This is a pilot project of Green Bangkok Projects and it's free of charge service.
The bike route circuit is about 18 kilometres at the Rattanakosin island, passes many attractive places in Bangkok. Eight bike stations are on along the route as see on map.
1. Sanam Luang, Grand Palace
3. National Theatre
5. Wat Bawornniwet
6. Giant Swing
7. Saranrom Palace
8. Wat Po
Everything sounds good but people knows how worst Bangkok traffic is. This is the first observation on August 14 th 2008, at Prasumen Fort in rush hour. The Phra Artit Road is full of cars, buses, Tuk Tuks, and motorcycles. There also are some venders on foothpaths.

This project provides a bike lane almost the bike route, but I don't see it at Prasumen. Hole coverings appear along the road. You can see a pale white spray on the road to notice the motorbike accident. Riding on footpath is safer. Do not forget to ring bell to get pedestrians move out of your way.

The bike station is on the roadside. There are about 50 bicycles wait for riders.
The citizen's ID card is enough to borrow a bicycle with a copy of route map. The foreign tourists are only required to leave copies of their passports. Service kiosks open between 10 AM and 6 PM on weekdays and 8 PM on weekends. All are free of charge services.

The bicycles are all new and fully maintained. The GPS devices are attached to keep tracking. And accident insurance covers all riders. No helmet provide.

The bike stations are located near Bangkok traveling destinations. Each place has its own atmosphere. This riverview is beside the Prasumen fort's park.
Other programs
Away from the main roads there is a fast system of small streets and alleys. Cyclists are treated as pedestrians, so you can use your bicycle to explore parks, temple complexes, markets and the more quiet residential areas of eastern Bangkok.
In more crowded places you can cycle on the sidewalk. Exploring the town by bicycle has all the advantages of going by foot, combined with a much greater action radius and a cooling breeze when cycling. The private cycling programs are available as follow
